Diabetes is a sneaky disease. You might have this disease and not even know it. The symptoms often start gradually and progress slowly. If you can learn to recognize the “high blood sugar” signs, you can begin to control diabetes and stop its progression. The signs may include:

  • Excessive thirst sometimes combined with continuous dry mouth
  • Frequent urination
  • Extreme hunger – especially strong cravings for carbohydrates and sugar
  • Unexplained weight gain, can’t lose weight, or sometimes unexplained weight loss
  • Constant fatigue – always tired, especially after a meal (a baked potato can put you to sleep quickly)
  • In women, vaginal yeast or fungal infections
  • Erectile dysfunction in men
  • Blurred vision
  • Headaches
  • Tingling or burning pain in the feet, legs, and hands
  • Unusual cramping in legs and feet
  • Unexplained areas of darkened skin, called acanthosis nigricans, which may be a sign of insulin resistance
  • Gum infections
  • Boils
  • “Tight skin” feeling, especially on legs
  • Scaly feet
  • Uneasy or interrupted sleep
  • Short-term memory impairment

If you or a loved one is suffering any of these diabetes symptoms please see a physician right away. The diagnosis of diabetes is very troubling and scary, but the control of this disease is mostly up to you, with the help of your physician. The biggest thing you can do to control your disease is to control your diet and learn to monitor your blood sugar. You can live a relatively normal, healthy life even if you have Type II Diabetes.
